Nathan Tocus turns pens, cuts and hauls wood, is our resident photographer and technology lifesaver. We couldn't do this without him. In his spare time, he builds and flies high-powered rockets and walks the Historical Woods dogs.

We work with several artisans who handcraft items for us. Their work is featured in our shop, and you will find links to their own pages there.

HWA founder William Jewell commissioned to make gift for President Bush, President Clinton, Virginia Gov. McAuliffe, Political Commentator William O’Reilly, and former U.S. Senator John Warner

Gift for President Bush - George Washington Horse Chestnut Pen & Box

A beautiful handcrafted fountain pen and box, made from a tree that George Washington planted, is now in the hands of President George W. Bush. William Jewell was asked to create a special gift for the President by the Rotary Club of Stafford, Virginia, who sponsored his visit to Fredericksburg for a speech on the economy.

"When I found out that the special guest was President George W. Bush, immediately I knew what the gift should be. I thought, What would be more fitting than a beautiful fountain pen and box set for the President's desk?"

The wood used to create these items comes from America's Historic Horse Chestnut Tree, which was reclaimed by Historical Woods of America from Fauquier Street in downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia. This is the last of the 13 Horse Chestnut trees known to have been planted by George Washington to represent each of the 13 colonies, and to provide shade for his mother and sister as they walked to and from each other's houses. The pen was presented in a box handmade by Tim Eggers, a craftsman for Historical Woods, and engraved by John Bufalari of American Wood and Stone, Inc.

When presented with the gift, President Bush said "Thanks for the gift that was planted by the first G.W."  The local newspaper, The Freelance Star interviewed Mr. Jewell and made a videotape the making of this pen.  Historical Woods of America was honored by this opportunity to create a gift from such a national treasure for the President.

The collector's grade fountain pen was created using the black titanium/rhodium Emperor style components supplied by Craft Supplies USA.

Natural Treasures: History in the Making

Catalog of Artwork Available from Exhibit

This unprecedented exhibition and sale showcases the creations of internationally acclaimed wood artists exhibiting their interpretations of America's history through contemporary designs formed from our most treasured trees.

Each artist is provided with wood whose roots are steeped in American history, and asked to create a distinctive form which highlights their unique style as well as the historic site from which the wood was reclaimed.

National Treasures will celebrate the historic events that framed our nation, changed our way of life and continue to inspire our world today.

National Treasures featured in Woodwork Magazine

Presented by William E. Jewell of Historical Woods of America, with co-curator and wood sculptor Jacques Vesery, the exhibit made its National debut March 18-21, 2010 at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show in New York City.

About the Exhibit

William Jewell and Jacques Vesery have brought together a select group of the world's most talented and respected wood artists at work today for a series of exhibits. The artists selected by William and Jacques have used wood reclaimed by HWA from some of America's most historic witness trees and historic sites in the nation.

The trees and timbers used in the creation of this body of work are reclaimed, or rescued,  for various reasons such as storm damage, safety concerns, disease, or simply very old trees that have come to the end of their natural life.

HWA has reclaimed trees that were planted by some of our nation's first presidents; trees from the grounds of several presidential estates, Civil War witness trees and others. The artists have been supplied with wood that they chose from a list of species with these historic connections. Design and creation of the artwork was left to the artist’s imagination.

An expert in the field of historic tree reclamation and creative repurposing, as well as a professional woodworker, Jewell’s success in the creation of a business and brand like no other has lead him to venture out on a grand scale with the historic “Witness Trees” and timbers that he has reclaimed over the last several years. These trees and timbers have a direct and extremely important connection to our cultural past. By preserving history through the creation of museum-quality works of art, this connection will be carried on for many generations to come.
